What is an AI receptionist?
Overview
A VoiceCraft AI receptionist is a voice agent that answers real phone calls on behalf of your business. It uses speech-to-text, a language model, and text-to-speech to have natural conversations with callers.
What it can do
Depending on how you configure it, your receptionist can:
Answer questions about your business using uploaded knowledge documents (FAQs, pricing, policies)
Book appointments by checking real-time calendar availability via Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook
Take orders by reading menu items and capturing order details over the phone
Collect information using form templates (intake forms, contact details)
Send SMS messages for appointment confirmations, order follow-ups, or custom messages
Transfer calls to a real person when it cannot handle a request (warm transfer with escalation rules)
Take voicemail when configured, with automatic transcription
How it works
A caller dials your provisioned phone number.
The call is routed through your telephony provider (Twilio or Plivo) to LiveKit.
LiveKit connects to the VoiceCraft voice worker, which runs speech-to-text (Deepgram), processes the conversation with a language model, and responds with text-to-speech.
The agent follows your configured conversation flow, greets the caller, and handles their request.
After the call, a transcript is saved, and any actions (bookings, orders, form submissions) are logged.
