Building your first AI receptionist
How the AI builder works
When you click New receptionist from the Voice Agents page, VoiceCraft opens a full-screen AI chat builder. You describe your business in plain language, and the AI generates a complete agent configuration.
The conversation flow
The builder tracks five key topics as you chat:
Appointment booking - Can your receptionist book appointments?
SMS follow-up - Should it send text confirmations or follow-ups?
Knowledge upload - Do you have documents (FAQs, menus, policies) the agent should reference?
Voice selection - What voice and language should it use?
Menu/orders - Does your business take orders over the phone?
Progress dots at the top show how many topics you have covered. Once all five are addressed, you can finalize and create the agent.
Example starter prompt
You might say something like: "I run a fitness studio in Chicago. We offer yoga and pilates classes. I want the receptionist to book class reservations and answer questions about pricing."
What gets generated
The builder creates a full agent config including:
Business name and greeting
Conversation flow and capabilities
Which duties are enabled (appointments, orders, forms)
Voice and language preferences
Saving and resuming
Your builder conversation is saved automatically. If you leave mid-conversation, you will see a draft nudge on the Voice Agents page to resume. You can also discard an incomplete conversation and start fresh.
Agent limit
Your subscription plan determines how many agents you can create. If you have reached your limit, you will see a "Receptionist limit reached" message with an option to upgrade.
